Food and Beverage Manufacturing in Ashland

Ashland’s Food and Beverage Manufacturing industries are well-established. Innovative breweries, wholesale bakers, wineries producing award-winning wines and other food manufacturers create a variety of products, many that are sold locally. Businesses in these industries often export goods out of the area as well and are supported by a dynamic supply chain and transportation system. Food manufacturing accounts for 12 established firms and 114 employees with an average payroll of $25,456 and a total payroll of $2,899,903.  Beverage manufacturing in Ashland is represented by 6 firms with 32 employees, an average payroll of $26,206 and a total payroll of $840,790.  The growing strength of the beverage sector is evident with the recent startup of a new local brewery, the beginning of a “mini-cluster.”

Oregon’s wine industry is ranked 4th in the country in production with Southern Oregon representing roughly 25% of the state’s output. From a climate perspective, the Southern Oregon AVA (American Viticultural Area) offers the most diverse growing conditions in Oregon and arguably in the United States. Currently, the Southern Oregon AVA is home to just over 100 wineries, over 250 vineyards growing grapes on nearly 5,000 acres that consist of over 70 varieties of red and white winegrapes that are made into a wide range of wine styles. - Excerpted from numerous articles written by Gregory V. Jones, professor and research climatologist in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy at Southern Oregon University who specializes in the study of climate structure and suitability for viticulture, and how climate variability and change influence grapevine growth, wine production and quality.
